Эти слова произносят, когда по ходу разговора говорящий вдруг вспоминает о чем-то по ассоциации с только что сказанным. Например:

“I love getting her letters. Come to think of it, I haven’t had one for a while.” – «Я люблю получать от нее письма. Кстати, а я ведь уже давно ничего от нее не получал».

Узнав о гибели «Титаника», дама восклицает: “What a tragedy! Is it true? I thought it was supposed to be unsinkable.” – «Какая трагедия!
